CHAPTER 21: KATIE'S STORY WITH ADHD

Katie is a vivacious and bright thirty-seven-year-old mother of three children. Prior to having children, she was a chemist. Recently earning her Masters in secondary education, she is now teaching high school chemistry. Neither she nor her husband has a known history of food allergies. None of her children exhibited true allergic reactions to food when they were babies or older. Only the middle child, Simon, exhibited some food sensitivities as a baby. He appeared to have a great deal of gas after consuming dairy and cried a lot.

When Simon was four, he entered preschool. Katie explains, "Both Simon's preschool teacher and I started noticing that Simon's behavior was not like most of the other children. He was extremely fidgety, was constantly on the move, and had trouble waiting in lines. He couldn't seem to wait for his turn to speak or keep his hands to himself when around his classmates. He also had a habit of getting too close to people when speaking with them." Katie felt Simon also appeared to be excessively anxious at times. Because Simon was only four and was a boy, Katie and the teacher decided to work with him in hope that Simon would change by the time he reached kindergarten. They both knew that he would be required to sit still to learn how to read in kindergarten. This was something that was impossible for Simon to do.

In the spring when Simon was five, Katie took him to his kindergarten screening. During the screening the kindergarten teacher watched Simon closely. Katie recalls, "When Simon was nervous, his behavior became worse. Since he was nervous during this kindergarten screening, it was easy to observe the hyperactive behavior." After the screening process, the kindergarten teacher contacted his preschool teacher to inquire as to whether his hyperactive behavior appeared in preschool as well. The preschool teacher reported that unfortunately he did indeed exhibit hyperactive behavior.

...[Katie's detailed story]...

Conclusion...Katie loves Simon and notes that he is such a good boy saying, “He always asks me if it is okay to eat something. He knows that the new diet makes him happier and improves his ability to concentrate in school.” In addition to Simon’s own realization that he is now doing better in school, Simon’s grandparents on both sides of the family see the improvements in his behavior.  It has been a real gift.
