CHAPTER 30: FOOD ALLERGIES AND ASTHMA

...It may be difficult to link the food allergies to the asthma attack, because as with ADHD and autism, the reaction may not be immediate. When reactions occur several hours or two days later it is not the typical IgE antibody, but rather the IgG antibody. As described earlier in the chapters on autism and ADHD, identifying food allergies for a child with asthma may not work with the traditional skin prick tests because the IgE antibody must affect the skin within about twenty minutes. Instead, the IgG antibody may not appear for a day or two, so a lab analysis of the blood to identify an IgG antibody would be needed. Sometimes the blood tests are not reliable and some doctors recommend having the testing done twice to improve the accuracy of the results. Again, even conducting the test by two different labs and at two different times may increase the accuracy of the results.

Despite the difficulty in identifying and eliminating foods to improve asthma, it might just be the best answer. Here is an interesting example from NPTech Services in the United Kingdom:

Christian Mayer, world class athlete, is among the benefactors of the attention given to the relationship between food intolerance and respiratory problems. This Austrian skier, who won the World Cup in the Giant Slalom two years in a row and a bronze medal at the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, suffered every season with breathing problems...[details of story]...

But this world-class athlete says the most important benefit is this, “I’m winning. Right after the test I won my first World Cup in America. I was surprised by the test results because I’d always thought foods like apples and bananas are healthy, but they’re not for me. I avoid my reactive foods and I feel better.”

Dr. Shimpf, however, was not surprised by the results, “I’ve got used to great results with food intolerance testing with my patients, so amazing results like this no longer astonish me.”
